The Idea
To make tango accessible, safe, and relatable for youth in Buenos Aires through a dedicated school and practice space just for youth, and innovative teaching approaches tailored to different age groups.
This initiative introduces a creative approach to teaching tango, specifically designed for youth in the range of about 10-30 years old. Through tango games, play, and making tango “cool”, we're creating new pathways for young people to connect with tango culture. And by removing financial barriers, we ensure tango learning opportunities reach those who might otherwise never access it.
Why Youth Tango Matters
Tango teaches young people valuable life skills: healthy emotional expression, body and self awareness, social connection, and creative thinking, which are crucial tools for resilience and growth. It provides a healthy outlet for expression, and builds strong friendships, belonging, and community bonds. Beyond personal growth, tango can open doors to international employment opportunities later in life, which is especially valuable for youth from underprivileged backgrounds who might otherwise never have the chance to travel abroad.
Most importantly, when young people in Buenos Aires connect with tango, they become active participants in their cultural heritage rather than passive observers. By reimagining tango through the eyes of youth, they are keeping the culture alive and evolving, ensuring its relevance for future generations.
Project Goals
- Make tango relatable to younger generations across all socioeconomic backgrounds
- Create safe and engaging spaces for youth to explore tango
- Foster creativity and personal expression through dance
- Preserve and evolve tango culture through inclusive youth engagement
- Build community and belonging for youth through a shared experience
- Create employment opportunties for young tango professionals
Project Phase 1
Phase one begins with a trial as a test of the interest of the project amongst youth. Classes will be “a la gorra”, and run in cultural centers and dance studios. We will also work on collaborating with local schools and youth community centers.
During this trial we’ll be spending a lot of time talking to youth, learning about their individual stories and situations and finding out what made them feel motivated to join a class. We’ll also be testing different teaching methodologies, and finding out what sparks interest and really what doesn’t. The class curriculum is already in its creativity process.
Future phases will build on Phase 1 learnings, working toward a model that balances self sustainability with accessibility for all youth from all social and economic backgrounds.
Would you like to help or join the project?
The Youth Tango Initiative needs both monetary and skills support. We need to raise funds for fair and livable pay for teachers, project management, liason with schools and local communities, and cultural center rental.
If you’d rather help personally, we're looking for a team of local cultural advisors, community advocates and promoters, and project champions and supporters.
Your support will help bring tango into the daily lives of young people across Buenos Aires, creating new spaces where they can connect, express themselves, and grow through dance. Together, we can create spaces where youth feel inspired to explore tango in their own way.
